Our client, SustainaPLATE is a youth start-up funded by OCBC and supported by organisations like EB Impact and Meta. SustainaPLATE is focused on reducing household food waste through conscious grocery shopping via digital platforms.

Timeline

From exploring and understanding the product to final designs in 3 weeks.

Background

SustainaPLATE leverages existing ingredients and generative recipes to optimize meal planning and pushes for more conscious grocery shopping. The app seamlessly integrates shopping lists, recipes, meal planning, pantry tracking and expiration tracking all in one app. Also in the stages of discussion is a collaboration with Singapore's supermarkets such as NTUC or RedMart for a check-out integration in the app.

Process

This category details the step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, planning, design, development, testing, and optimization phases.

Research & Planning

Conducted market and literature research to identify existing challenges, user knowledge and preferences concerning food wastage in Singapore. Research was also conducted to determine the feasibility of AI integration, and validate features that our clients came up with.

Design & Prototyping

Further developed client's initial ideas and created intuitive user interfaces and interactive prototypes as a team. Iteratively refined designs based on user feedback to enhance usability.

Development & Implementation

We leveraged agile development methodologies to build the app from the ground up. Prioritized clarity feature development based on user feedback and technical feasibility.

Testing & Optimization

Conducted repeated testing across various devices and platforms to ensure compatibility and performance. Gathered user feedback through usability testing and iteratively optimized the app based on usability metrics and user satisfaction.

The resulting all-in-one kitchen app offers a seamless user experience, allowing individuals and families to engage in conscious grocery shopping and utilizing existing ingredients in their pantry to plan their meals better.

Generative Recipes

Research suggests that there is no existing LLM for recipes and building one will exceed the client's budget as well as the project time frame. Hence, we proposed a filtering system based on ingredients instead.

Meal Planning

Meal planning was deemed important in reducing food waste from our user research, so a meal planning feature was included. From the recipe pages, users can choose to add their selected recipe into their meal planner.

Shopping List

Users can personalize their shopping lists for different occasions, simplifying the meal planning process.

Adjustable Serving Size

To reduce food waste, an option to adjust the serving size for each individual's needs are included.

Expiry Tracking

Calculated based on users' purchase date, the app gently reminds users of when an item in their pantry is expiring. Users can then plan their meals considering the expiry to prevent food waste.

  • GENERATIVE RECIPES

Filter for recipes based on ingredients that you have in your pantry or an ingredient you are interested in.

“Huh? I don’t get it, this is so confusing!”
  • 4 of 5 users got lost navigating the app

  • They were confused with using the app and made it difficult for them to achieve their tasks

Analysis

The current navigation terms were confusing for users as they were not familiar with them.

Reccommendations

Change navigation terms to those that are commonly used in other apps to reduce friction.

Design Iteration

Updated navigation terms - clearer terms that are similar to other apps used in navigation.

“Shopping list was useful, but the toggle on top confused me”
  • 3 of 5 users were confused about the shopping list.

  • 1 user completely missed it out

Analysis

Current information architecture needs to be streamlined to allow users to get to where they want to go simpler.

Reccommendations

Bring users to where they need to be by reducing number of clicks to get there.

Design Iteration

Simplified I.A. - Instead of having Shopping Lists with Kitchen and; Recipes with Planner in one tab, we decided to have separate tabs in the navigation.
